What are the types of absorbable sutures?
Plain catgut
Chromic catgut
Vicryl
What are the types of non absorbable sutures?
Silk
Nylon
Polyester fibre
What is catgut made out of?
Sheep intestine
Why do we use sutures?
Haemostatic measure, promote healing
Monofilament vs polyfilament
Monofilament causes wicking, difficult to tiem ends are stiffer (more irritating to tongue)
Polyfilament are softer and non irritating to tongue, do not wick
Which is the strongest suture material?
Polyester fibre
How long does plain catgut take to dissolve?
3-5 days
How long does chromic catgut take to dissolve?
7-10 days
How long does vicryl take to dissolve
3-4 weeks
Explain plain and chromic catgut
Plain = provides fastest healing of tissues, breaks easily, difficult to handle, dissolves too fast
Chromic = treated with chromic salts thus provides slower healing time, longer lasting
What are the types of suture needles used?
Half circle, 3/8ths circle
When would you consider using sutures in a patient?
Flappy tissue, increased bleeding risk
