Oral Mucosa Flashcards
oral mucosa
the tissue that lines the surface of the oral cavity
categrories of oral mucosa memebrane
specialized
masticatory
lining
Mucosa on dorsum (dorsal surface) of tongue
specialized
Gingivae and hard palate which undergo trauma or compression during mastication.
masticatory
All other areas of oral mucosa.
examples include (5)
lining
cheeks
lips
soft palate
alveolar mucosa
beneth tounge
what is oral mucosa memebrance composed of
stratified squamous epithelium and underlying connective tissue
stratified squamous epithelium 3 dif types
orthokertanized
parakertanized
non keratnized
Stratum corneum = surface layers of dead cells without nuclei
Stratum granulosum = granules clearly evident
Stratum spinosum = thick layers of prickle cells
Stratum Basale = basal layer
Underlying connective tissue
Orthokeratinized oral mucosa:
Stratum corneum = surface layer has some dead cells without nuclei and some apparently dying cells with slightly shrivelled nuclei.
Stratum granulosum not as clearly evident.
Stratum spinosum = thick layers of prickle cells
Stratum Basale = basal layer
Underlying connective tissue
parakertanize oral mucosa
Superficial and intermediate layer = cells all tend to have nuclei that appear reasonably healthy and normal if slightly flattened.
Stratum granulosum = missing
Stratum spinosum = thick layers of prickle cells
Stratum Basale = basal layer
Underlying connective tissue
Non-keratinized oral mucosa
tissue interdigitation
occurs between epitelium and connective tissue
tightness accounts for mobility of mucosa
healthy gingiva is tightly atttached to x and x and has a stippled apperance
connective tissue and bone
what causes aleveolar mucosa to be more reddened
the pressence of blood vessels that run through the epithelium
palatal mucosa
hard palatae
thickest in the mucosa
orthokeritanized
tounge has 4 types of papilae
circumvallate
fungiform
filform
foliate
