Oral Mucosa Flashcards
what are the functions of the oral mucosa?
protection (mechanical, infection, immunity)
sensation
secretion
absorption
thermoregulation - not in humans
what are the 3 types of oral mucosa?
masticatory
lining
gustatory
what is the final step of mastication?
push tongue against roof of mouth to swallow to make food soft and moist
where is the masticatory mucosa?
-any part of mucosa involved in mastication
-parts of tooth and surrounding palate
-attached mucosa and palate
where is the lining mucosa?
-lines around mouth
- under tongue
-around cheeks
where is the gustatory mucosa?
feels taste
covers upper (dorsum) surface of tongue
features of masticatory mucosa?
subject to friction and compression (para)keratinised
thick lamina propria
features of lining mucosa?
mobile and distensible
keratinised
loose lamina propria and wide submucosa
- more rapid turnover than masticatory mucosa
(heals faster as no keratin/keratinisation)
features of gustatory mucosa?
keratinised
papillae, some bearing taste buds
similar to masticatory
what type of epithelium in a mucosa
stratified
can be keratinised or nonkeratinised
in a mucosa what is the underlying connective tissue that attaches to the bone?
lamina propria
what is the stratum germinativum?
BASAL LAYER
cells that generate other cells
constant process as shedding mucosa
cells reproducing (mitosis)
what does the stratum granulosum do?
GRANDUAL LAYER
accumulates granules (contain lipids)
help to form a waterproof barrier that functions to prevent fluid loss from the body
what does the stratum spinosum do?
PRICKLE CELL LAYER
helps make your skin flexible and strong
what does that stratum corneum do?
CORNIFIED LAYER
outermost layer of the epidermis
-barrier that prevents unwanted materials from entering, and excessive loss of water from exiting the body
