Oral Motor Dev Flashcards
Phasic Bite Reflex
Stimulate gums, infant makes up/down movements with jaw
Rooting Reflex
Stroke cheek, infant turns head toward stimulus
Newborn OMD
Tongue fills oral cavity Sucking Fat pads—stabilize cheeks Suck-swallow reflex Rooting reflex Gag reflex-strong in first 3 months Phasic bite reflex Sucks and suckles when hand or object come into contact with mouth
Suck-Swallow Reflex
Lips are touched and infant opens mouth an starts to suck
1 Month OMD
Still has sucking, rooting and gag reflex
Tongue does not protrude beyond gums any more
Mouth and tongue function as one unit
Nose breather
Still using suck reflex with bottle.
2 Month OMD
Suckling pattern emerges. Tongue moves in and out and the jaw moves up and down
Loss of fluid from corners of mouth and increased drool
Infant gaining visual control but not control over lower portion of face
3 Month OMD
Rooting dropping out
Voluntarily open mouth for bottle upon visual sight
With increased controlled flexion and chin tuck you see suckling look better
4 Month OMD
Decrease in gag reflex
Increase jaw stability so suckling returns to suck with only movement of tongue
Begins to coo
Hands to mouth also facilitate increased jaw stability
Mouthing
Facilitates: lip, tongue, jaw and cheek control
Cognitively helps them learn about shape, textures, sizes, etc…
5 Month OMD
With improved flexion and extension and head control see improved jaw stability
See true suck pattern
Spoon feeding starts and infant opens mouth for spoon
Uses suck pattern to clear spoon
Phasic bite gone
Loses liquid from corner of lips
Gag on new textures
6 Month OMD
Increased oral play, tongue start to lateralize
Lips coming in for spoon and cup but then resorts to biting
Cheeks becoming more active drawing inward
Lots of teething
Increase drooling during babbling, reaching
Longer lip closure
Reflexes are gone
Decreased strength in gag reflex
Long sequence of suck-swallow-breathe with no liquid loss
7-9 Month OMD
Tongue beginning to laterally shift
Jaw begin shift laterally
Start to see a diagonal jaw movement when eating
Upper lip clears the spoon
Begin munching
Just starting cup drinking but only one sip at a time and looses a lot from corners of mouth
Bites on fingers and objects to reduce teething discomfort
Holding bottle
10-12 Month OMD
Licks food off lower lip
Rotary chewing moving the food from side to side in the mouth
Can take 4-5 sips from a cup and has better control
Needs assistance with spoon
Will often invert spoon before putting it in mouth
Transition from a bottle to a cup
See biting on the tip of the cup to stabilize jaw
15-18 Month OMD
Now takes chopped foods
Well coordinated rotary chewing by 18 months
Can drink from a cup and set it down without spilling it
Three Year OMD
Drinking through a straw and serving self
Hold cup in one hand
Scooping with a spoon and using a fork
