What are the two types of toothbrush you can get
- manual
- electric
What are the types of electric toothbrush
- oscillating rotary
- sonic
- ultrasonic
- ionic
What are the 3 parts of a manual toothbrush
Head, neck, handle
What are the features of a manual toothbrush
- rounded nylon fibres
- multi turfed
- medium soft
- small head
Brush should be replaced every 2-3 months
Describe medium bristle hardness
0,25-0,20mm
Describe soft bristle hardness
0,18-0,15mm
Describe ultrasoft bristle hardness
<0,12mm
Describe the bristle hardness
- equal bristle lengths
- pyramidal bristles - for occlusal surfaces
- reversed-V reversed pyramid bristles- for fixed orthodontic appliances
- cross action bristles
Describe toothbrush maintenance
- toothbrush should be rinsed thoroughly under water after each use
- toothbrush should stored upwards, no direct contact with other brushed
When should toothbrushes be replaced
Before the bristles begin to spread, shed or loose elasticity - minimum once every 2-3 months
What is Bass’s technique
- proper toothbrush - multiturfed with equal length of bristles, with soft bristles
- toothbrush placed at 45 degrees angle with bristle tips pointing towards the gingival sulcus
- slight pressure so bristles go slightly towards the gum line
- 20-30 vibration sin one series, around 4-5 series for each teeth group
What is different about modified bass technique
- the bristles should make short and delicate back and forth movements with minimal displacement of the brushes head
- around 4-5 series for each teeth group, between each series of short 4-5 second break to relieve pressure on the gums
What is fones method
For children
Toothbrush positioned perpendicular to teeth at 90 degree angle with bristles faces the tooth
Slight pressure
The head of the brush makes round motions cleaning teeth from both dental arches at the same time
5 circular motions for each group
Palatal and lingual surfaces are cleaned in complete diffusion one dental arch at a time
How do you clean the occlusal surfaces
Delicately press the toothbrush into the tooth
5-10 back and forth motions over molars and premolars on each side and in each dental arch
What is surface cleaning
Clean each type of surface in each tooth one by one
What is solo method cleaning
Clean each of the 3 surfaces of a single tooth and then move to the next one
How long should each surface be cleaned
Minimum 3 seconds
How should you brush your teeth with sonic/ ultrasonic toothbrushes
Usually recommend just holding the brush in contact with teeth without any additional movement
What is the most important ingredient in toothpaste
Flouride
How much fluoride should be in adults toothpaste
1250-1450ppm
Describe the abrasive and polishing substances of toothpaste
Makes up 25%-60% of toothpaste
- hydrated di calcium phosphate
- silica gel, sodium aluminosilicate
- grounded plastics
Their content results in different RDA value

Aminofluorides, potassium and strontium salts
What chemicals will bactericidal and bacteriostatic toothpastes have
Stannous fluoride, trisclosan
What chemicals will bleaching toothpastes have
Carbamide, H202
What chemical will anti tartar control toothpaste have
Pyrophosphatase
