Occlusion Flashcards
Name the three parts of the articulatory/Masticatory system
- temporomandibular joints (TMJs)
- occlusion
- muscles of mastication
Describe the study of occlusion
The study of occlusion needs to take into consideration the close interrelationship between the articulation of the teeth and the muscles of mastication and the TMJ
Why is occlusion so important
Reduce risk of fracture/wear/failure
- tooth
- restoration
What detects changes in the occlusion
The periodontal ligament is able to detect materials between the teeth down to half the thickness of human hair
What can happen if the occlusion is not correct in a restoration
Risk of fracture or wear of the restorations with the wrong occlusion
What is a static occlusion
The correct occlusion when you bit down on your back teeth
What is a dynamic occlusion
When you move your teeth side to side
What is the definition of dynamic occlusion
The sideways movement of the mandible from a centric position
How do you mark the occlusal contacts
Articulating papers
What is the most commonly used articulating paper
40 U
Why are thinner articulating papers preferred
Using thin articulating paper minimise contacts artefacts and clearly indicate the tooth details
What is a T scan
Another way to test the occlusion
What does a T scan show
Shows how much pressure is exerted in each point of contact
What is good about thinner articulating paper
Marks only the small points of true contact
What is used to place articulating paper
Use miller forceps they securely grip the entire length of the articulating paper
