Oral Habits Flashcards
What are parafunctional habits?
Habits that are not normal and affect occlusion
In what order should you treat malocclusion?
First treat parafunctional habit, then treat occlusion
What is the correct position of the tongue?
on the palate bringing balance to all the teeth
What is the correct position of the tongue?
resting on the hard palate and back surface of upper incisors bringing balance to all the teeth
What happens with thumb sucking?
the tongue is depressed, the cheeks push towards the teeth and can cause posterior cross bite
How does self-correction occur?
tongue pressure or distal drift of primary canines into primate space
(canines usually erupt mesially)
T/F: Malocclusion can be due to skeletal problem only.
False. It can be due to dental, skeletal, or both!
How to diagnosis malocclusion and if it’s skeletal or dental?

What is the order of importance of non-nutritional sucking habit in regards to frequency, duration, and magnitude?
frequency least important
duration most important
Is thumb or pacifier more detrimental?
pacifier
because harder to remove from child
T/F: there is a benefit to an orthodontic pacifier
false
What are the potential dentoalveolar changes due to a pacifiers?
increased overjet, anterior open bite, posterior cross bite, and class II malocclusion
