Malocclusion Flashcards
What are the different types of malocclusion?
simple= single tooth
compound= multiple teeth
complex= skeletal discrepancy
compound and complex= dental and skeletal problem
What type of malocclusion would be with an over-protruded mandible?
complex (skeletal discrepancy)
T/F: Most causes of malocclusions are unknown.
True. 60% are unknown but likely genetic
Of the identifiable causes of malocclusions, what are some common ones?
-embryonic, growth disturbances, muscle dysfunction, trauma, etc.
(only 5% of etiologies)
How common are each malocclusion classes?
class I: 60%
class II: 30%
class III: 5%
What is the difference between a cross bite and functional shift?
cross bites have abnormal buccal-lingual relation between opposing teeth in centric relation
functional shifts undergo a midline compensatory or habitual shift when the teeth occlude in cross bite
Why is a cotton ball used to diagnose a functional shift in cross bites?
If placing the cotton ball at midline, we can see if it lined up or shifted to the side before and after biting
How do you differentiate between uni- and bilateral cross bite?
unilateral will only have one side effected
bilateral will have both sides effected
What is the cause of posterior cross bite?
thumb sucking or pacifier for too long
Does an anterior cross bite and open bite have negative or positive measurements?
negative
Does an overbite have negative or positive measurements?
positive
What are treatment options for malocclusion?
equilibration, appliance therapy, extractions, or combination of tx
How do slow vs rapid skeletal expanders work?
slow expansion starts working when first placed but then stops working over time
rapid expansion is activated the more you keep working oral cavity
How does the secondary palate fuze?
front to back
How does primary palate fuze?
back to front
