What are the main causes of solitary ulcers?
Physical/chemical, malignancy, infection (i.e. TB/syphilis)
Give the two types of multiple mouth ulcers.
Recurrent apthous ulceration, mucocutaneous multiple ulcers
What is the clinical term of dry mouth?
Xerostamia
Name the three main types of mucocutaneous multiple ulcers.
Lichen planus, lupus, vasiculobullous (pemphigoid, pemphigus)
What are the main causes of white patches in the mouth that 1. wipe off and 2. don’t?
- Candiadasis/thrush
2. Trauma/dysplasa/neoplasia/chronic candiadasis
90% of oral tumours are which type?
Squamous cell carcinoma
Where are the most common locations for oral cancer?
Mouth floor, tongue, soft palate
What do all tumours of the mouth show in relation to local tissue?
Invasion and destruction
Which sign shows good differentiation potential of oral tumours?
Keratinization
What is acrodermatitis enteropathica, and what nutritional status does it show?
Red rashes on the face, abdomen, genitals. Indicates impaired zinc
What is angular stomatitis, and what nutritional status does it show?
Sores on the creases of the lips. Vitamin B deficiency
What is glossitis, and what nutritional status does it show?
Inflammation of the tongue, shows vitamin B and iron
Easy bruising of the skin/face/mouth indicates which nutritional status?
Scurvy (vit C)/vit K deficiency
What does dermatitis herpetiforms indicate?
Coeliac or IgA
