How to take Combined Oral Contraceptives?
When to use protection and how long?
Who shouldn’t use it?
A
ONE tablet daily for 3 weeks and 1 week pill free for withdrawal bleeding
- If start on menstrual cycle day 6 or later use protection for 7 days
- Not for women over 50

Risk factors that further increase risk of VTE in oestrogen
A
- Type of progesterone: Desogestrel, Gestodene, Drosperinone
- Obesity BMI > 30
- Smoking
- Primary relative under 45 with WTE
- Superficial Thrombophlebitis
- Long term immobilisation
- 35 years +
Avoid if 2 or more risk factors present

Risk factors that further increase risk of Arterial Thromboembolism in oestrogen?
A
- Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, migraine without aura
Avoid if 2+ risk factors present
