Non-specific + Specific
A
Non blanching rash (Pale blotchy skin with widespread bruises which do not fade when pressed against a glass tumblr)
Non-specific
- Worsening flu-like symptoms
- High fever
- Severe muscle ache
- N+V
Specific
- Stiff neck
- Severe headache
- Cold hands and feet
- Confusion, drowsiness
- Photophobia - dislike bright lights
- Seizures

A
Floppiness/unresponsive (but stiff neck) Dislike being handled Refuse feeds Difficult to wake Rapid breathing/Grunting Unusual cry or moan Bulging fontanelle

A
Always refer meningitis

How to treat viral meningitis
A
Mild - paracetamol, ibuprofen
Viral don’t need hospital

What may bacterial meningitis lead to?
A
blood poisoning, limb amputations
