Oral Cavity & Pharynx Flashcards
Name the 2 arches in the oral cavity?
More anteriorly = Palatoglossal arch
Behind = Palatopharyngeal arch
All muscles of the tongue are innervated by the hypoglossal nerve except one. What is this muscle and its innervation?
Palatoglossus muscle innervated by the Vagus (X) nerve. Extrinsic muscle.
Name the 4 extrinsic muscles of the tongue
Genioglossus, Hypoglossus, Syoglossus and Palatoglossus
What does the submandibular gland drain through?
Wharton duct (Base of lingual frenulum)
What does the parotid gland drain through?
Stenson duct
What is sialolithiasis?
Salivary gland stones
Is tonsilitis more commonly bacterial or viral in cause?
Viral
Name 3 symptoms of a peritonsillar abscess
Drooling, difficulty opening the mouth, bad breath and fever
Name the 3 longitudinal muscles that elevate the pharynx and larynx during swallowing

What nerve innervates the pharyngeal constrictors?
Vagus (X)
Name the 2 parts of the inferior pharyngeal constrictor muscle
Thyropharyngeal and Cricopharyngeal
What is Killians Dehiscence?
An area of weakness between the 2 parts of the inferior pharyngeal constrictors that can form a diverticulum
What is the nerve supply to the Longitudinal muscles of the Pharynx and larynx?
Stylopharyngeus = CN IX
Palatopharyngeus and Salpingopharyngeus = CN X
