Oral Cavity (Lect) Flashcards
What are the two parts of the oral cavity and what do they consist of?
- Vestibule: space between the lip, cheeks, and teeth
2. Oral Cavity Proper: hard and soft palates, tongue, floor of mouth, and entrance to oropharynx
What are the 3 major paired salivary gland?
- parotid
- submandibular
- sublingual
Note: these have ducts that open into the oral cavity
T or F: the oral mucosa contains a layer of muscularis mucosa?
FALSE
What layers make up the mucosa in the oral cavity?
- epithelial layer
- lamina propria
What are the 3 types of mucosae that make up the epithelium in the oral cavity?
- Masticatory
- Specialized
- Lining mucosa
Where is MASTICATORY mucosa located and what type of cells make up its epithelium?
- Gingiva and hard palate
- Deep papillae
- Stratified Squamous keritinized or parakeratinized epithelium
Where is SPECIALIZED mucosa located and what type of cells make up its epithelium?
- Dorsum of the tongue
- Abundant PAPILLAE
- Stratified Sqaumous Keritinized epithelium
Where is LINING mucosa located and what type of cells make up its epithelium?
- everything that’s not masticatory or specialized
- Stratified Squamous nonkeratinized epithelium
Compare the papillae of the lining epithelium to that of the masticatory mucosa.
Lining epithelium have sparse short papillae
-help adapt to underlying muscle
Masticatory epithelium has deep papillae from underlying lamina propria that acts STRENGTHEN mucosal stability
What four types of papillae are located in the Specialized Mucosa?
- Filiform Papillae
- Fungiform Papillae
- Circumvallate Papillae
- Foliate Papillae
Which of the 4 types of papillae in the Specialized mucosa lacks taste buds?
Filiform = NO taste buds
Where are filiform papillae located and what is their arrangment?
- Over the entire anterior 2/3 of dorsal tongue
- organized into rows
Note: Highly keritinized
Describe the morphology of Fungiform papillae, their location, and arrangement.
- Mushroom shape (HAVE TASTE BUDS)
- Scatter among filiform on anterior 2/3
Note: these are not well developed in humans
Describe the morphology of Circumvallate papillae, their location, and arrangement.
- CASTLE AND MOAT SHAPE arrangment: each papilla is surrounded by a depression = “moat”
- 8-12 in a row divide the anterior 2/3 of the tongue and posterior 1/3 of the tonge
- HAVE TASTE BUDS - located on the LATERAL surface opening into the moat
- Have minor salivary glands
Describe the morphology of Foliate papillae, their location, and arrangement.
- Parallel low ridges on the lateral edge
- HAVE TASTE BUDS
What kinds of cells are located in taste buds?
3 Types
- Sensory Cells
- Supporting Cells
- Basal Cells
Describe the morphology and unique features of sensory cells in the taste bud.
- Elongated and Predominate
- Synapse with afferent nerve fiber
What is the job of supporting cells in the taste bud and what do they look like?
- Elongated like Glial Cell
What are basal cells in the taste bud?
- Short stem cells for the other two types
T or F: each taste bud only contains a single type of sensory cell.
FALSE
T or F: each sensory cell an can only have one type of sensory receptor
True
Where are taste buds for bitter things located?
Back of the tongue
T or F: taste buds can be located in places other than the tongue
True (some found on roof of mouth, posterior tongue, epiglottis, esophagus, and pharynx)
Describe the tissue layers in the tongue.
- Lots of STRIATED muscle covered by mucosa
