What are the 4 intrinsic muscles of the tongue/
superior longitudinal
vertical
transverse
inferior longitudinal
what are the 4 extrinsic muscles of the tongue?
palatoglossus
styloglossus
hypoglossus
genioglossus
what innervates special sensation of taste in the tongue?
chorda tympani (branch of facial nerve)
what innervates the muscles of the tongue? whats the exception?
hypoglossal nerve
palatoglossus muscle is innervated by the vagus nerve
what innervates general sensation to the anterior 2/3rds and posterior 1/3rd of the tongue?
anterior - lingua
posterior - glossopharyngeal
what is the lingual Nerve a branch of?
mandibular division of trigeminal nerve
what are the 3 branches of the trigeminal nerve?
opthalmic
maxillary
mandibular
whats the blood supply to the tongue?
lingual artery (branch of external carotid)
what are the 3 branches of the lingual artery?
sublingual branch
deep lingual branch
dorsal lingual branch
what does the lingual artery supply?
tongue
oral mucosa of floor of mouth
sublingual gland
muscles attached to hyoid (via supra hyoid muscle)
outline the embryology of the tongue?
starts at week 4
tubercula impar arises from 1st pharyngeal arch
lateral lingual swellings grow and cover the median tongue bud and fuse to form the anterior 2/3rds of the tongue
the copula forms from the 3rd and 4th pharyngeal arches and grows over the 2nd pharyngeal arch
anterior 2/3rds and posterior 1/3rd of the tongue fuse at the sulcus terminalis
what innervates the hard palate?
greater palatine and nasopalatine nerves (both branches of maxillary branch of trigeminal)
what innervates the soft palate?
lesser palatine nerve (branch of maxillary branch of trigeminal nerve)
what innervates the cheeks?
buccal nerve (mandibular devision of trigeminal nerve)
what are the 3 salivary glands?
parotid
submandibular
sublingual
