OR3 - Sustainability Flashcards
What is environmental sustainability?
-ecosystem erosion
-unsustainable practices damaging the planet
-inability to regenerate
What is organisational sustainability?
-project/programme is sustainable in terms of availability of skills & resources
-ability to cope with the rate of change, impacting organisations & service areas, at any one time
Sustainability (random definition provided)?

4 sustainability concern areas that must be balanced on any change initiative?
-environment: climate change, biodiversity & energy efficiency
-economic: affordability, risk management, & the need to generate profit
-social: consideration of human rights, equality (race/gender) & examination of the needs/expectations of wider community
-administrative: legislation & regulation, health & safety & finally resource efficiency
-all 4 need to be considered when thinking of sustainability
What is ‘Triple Bottom Line - TBL’?
-how organisations operate & in turn frame their corporate objectives & direction
-considers the economic, social & environmental concern areas (hence TRIPLE bottom line)
-think that economic should also refer to legislation & regulation so hence the administrative area sustainability concern too
How do project outputs impact on these areas of concern relating to sustainability - REGULATIONS?
-anything produced must be done so in light of environmental regulations & legislation, so that we can’t harm the environment e.g. leaking harmful chemicals when implementing a new business process
How do project outputs impact on these areas of concern relating to sustainability - ECONOMIC?
-might be reflected in a project/programme’s business case
-need consideration of financial benefits as well as side effects & consequences of changes that must be accounted for
How do project outputs impact on these areas of concern relating to sustainability - ENVIRONMENTAL?
-in terms of impact on air pollution levels, or child safety regarding road crossings etc cannot be ignored
How do project with non-physical outputs impact on these sustainability areas?
-all projects will have to adhere to regional/national/international regulations & standards & therefore any administrative areas of concern
-new ways of working (ppl, processes culture & policy) need positive environmental impact e.g. paper storage, remote meetings
-transformational IT changes including efficiencies & unexpected customer behaviour/trends
What is ISO 14001?
-Internationally recognised set of guidelines for environmental management
What is LEED?
-Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design
-framework for healthy, highly efficient, & cost-saving green buildings
What is B Corp?
-Transforming the global economy to benefit all people, communities & the planet
What is SASB?
