Option B Human Musculoskeletal Anatomy Flashcards
In embryos, what germ layer does connective/skeletal tissue develop from?
Mesoderm
What are the 3 types of cartilage?
Hyaline
White fibrous (fibrocartilage)
Yellow elastic
What cells are cartilage made up of?
Chondrocytes that secrete an extra cellular matrix made of collagen & elastin
How does cartilage cells (chondrocytes) obtain nutrients/gases?
Diffusion, but slow rate means healing is slow
What are the properties and function of hyaline cartilage?
Model for bone development in foetal development, prevents friction. Matrix containing collagen fibres. Located in tracheal rings and larynx.
What are the properties and functions of white fibrous cartilage?
Supports load bearing mechanisms with great tensile strength. Matrix contains collagen fibres arranged parallel to direction of stress. Located in intervertebral discs.
