Optics Flashcards
Light bouncing off a surface:
Reflection
Glowing filament of a light bulb is an example of
Incandescence
Primary colours of light:
Red, green, blue
Red light and blue light are mixed:
Magenta or purple
Green light and blue light are mixed:
Cyan light
Red and green light:
Yellow light
Translucent:
Some light passed through
Transparent
All light passes through (clear)
Can light travel through a vaccum?
Yes
Speed of light in a vacuum
300 000 km/s
Electromagnetic spectrum
Radio > microwave > infrared > (VISIBLE) > uv > x-Ray > gamma rays
Bioluminescence
The production of light by living things
Incandescent:
Lights that use a heated and electrical filament to produce light
Fluorescent:
Low pressure , tubed, gas charged lights
Chemiluminescence
Chemical reactions that produce lights
White light:
Mixture of all given colored that haven’t been dispersed
Why would someone’s shirt appear red ?
Because it absorbs all the other colours a
Law of reflection :
Incident angle = reflected angle
Refraction:
The light changing direction due to entering a different medium
If light travels to a denser medium it
Slows down and moves toward he medium
If light enters a less dense medium
It speeds up and moves away from the normal
Critical angle:
The angle at which light creates total internal reflection & the refracted Ray falls along the boundary
An object would have to be placed where if you wanted a virtual image reflected in a concave mirror?
In front of the focal point
Concave mirrors create an image..
Concave mirrors form a virtual image that is larger than the actual object
