Optics Flashcards
What is incandescence?
Production of light due to high temperature. Caused by thermal radiation.
What is Electric Discharge? Example?
Production of light due to the passing of current through a gas.
Lighting, neon sign.
What is fluorescence? Example?
Taking in of non visible, shorter wavelength light, and immediately releasing longer wavelength visible light.
Highlighter, fluorescent light.
What is Phosphorescence? Example?
Taking in of shorter wavelength light and slowly releasing longer wavelength visible light over a period of time.
Glow in the dark toys, stickers, etc.
What is Chemiluminescence? Example?
Direct production of light as the result of a chemical reaction where little to no heat is produced.
Glow stick.
Bioluminescence? Example?
Production of light from a living organism as the result of a chemical reaction with little to no heat produced- Chemiluminescence in an organism.
Firefly.
Triboluminescence? Example?
Light produced from friction if certain crystals rubbed together.
Sugar being crushed.
What is a LED? Example?
Light produced by current going through a semiconductor.
Christmas lights, led lights.
What’s the order of light waves from longest to shortest wavelength?
Radio wave, microwave, IR, Visible, UV, X-ray, gamma ray.
What is the relationship of the angle of incidence and angle of reflection in a plane mirror?
Equal.
Which eye disorder happens in old age? Where does it make the virtual image relative to retina. What “sightedness” is it?
Presbyopia. Behind the retina. Far sighted (can’t see up close).
What is the condition of near sightedness. Where is the virtual image?
Myopia. Infront of the retina.
What is hyperopia? What are causes? Where is image?
Farsightedness caused by squished eyeball (genetic not old age). Image is behind the retina.
