Optical Techniques Flashcards
What is radiant energy?
It is waves and photons traveling in waves that need to be in visible,e spectrum to be called light
What is wavelength?
It is a measurement of light. The linear distance between two peaks
What is wavelength measured in?
nm
The distance between a peak and a trough is called?
Amplitude
What is the relationship between amplitude and intensity of light?
The greater the amplitude, the greater the intensity of light
What is electromagnetic radiation?
This is radiant energy from gamma waves to microwaves
What wavelengths are the visible region?
400-800 nm
What is photometry?
Photometry is the measurement of the luminous intensity of radiant energy/visible light
What is spectrophotometry?
It is the measurement of light intensity at selected wavelengths
What is the difference between photometry and spectrophotometry?
Photometry measures intensity of light as seen by human eye while spectrophotometry measures light intestinal at each wavelength in whole electromagnetic spectrum.
Photometers use narrow bands of light to get wavelength while spectrophotometers use diffraction gratings or prisms to isolate monochromatic wavelengths
What is a spectrophotometer?
An instrument using a prism or grating to isolate a specific wavelength that measures the transmitted light of a solution and calculates the absorbable value
