OPTHALM Flashcards
What is a slit lamp?
a microscope with light source used during an eye exam
allows ophthalmologist to closely see the structures at the front and inside the eye
fluorescein is used with slit lamp in cases of corneal ulceration or FB
How is glaucoma investigated?
Fundoscopy - optic disc cupping, optic disc pallor, bayonetting of vessels, cup notching and disc haemorrhages
Slit lamp - optic nerve and fundus assessed
OCT - measure corneal thickness
gonioscopy - detect FB in ete with use of fluorescein dye
applantation tonometry - measures IOP
How are cataracts investigated?
Opthalmoloscopy after pupil dilatation
- normal fundus and optic nerve
Slit lamp = visible cataract
What is involved in fluorescein dye investigation? what it is used for?
A orange dye and a vlue light is used to detect foreign bodies in the eye
the test can also detect damage to the cornea
- ulcers, abrasions etc
the slit-lamp opthlamoscope is used to visualise the changes/FBs
What is fundoscopy?
a test allowing visualisation of the fundus - back of the eye
What is the amsler grid?
a tool used by opticians use to detect visual problems resulting from damage to the macula - central part of the retina or the optic nerve
What is optical coherence tomography?
OCT is a non-invasive imagine test
- light waves used to take cross-sectional pictures from the retina
allows visualisation of the retina’s distinctive layers
- map and measure its thickness
they can also help to guide treatment for glaucoma and other diseases of the retina such age related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy
