opioids my q's Flashcards
1
Q
therapeutic uses
A
- produce analgesia
2
Q
side effects
A
- drowsiness/sedation
- dysphoria
- nausea
- constipation
- hypothermia
- effects on resp system
- effects on cardiovascular system
3
Q
potency of opioids
A
- fentanyl (most potent)
- buprenorphine
- butorphanol
- methadone
- morphine
- tramadol
- pethidine
the higher the potency, the lower the dose
4
Q
pharcokinetics
A
- best route in parenteral administration (Iv, IM, etc)
- fentanyl has high absorption but accumulates in fat tissue
- metabolism is caused by conjugation reactions by liver enzyme
5
Q
DOA from longest to shortest
A
- tramadol 12 hours
- buprenorphine 10 hrs
- codeine 6-8 hrs
- methadone 3-4 hrs
- morphine 4 hrs
- butorphanol 2-3 hrs
- pethdine 1-2 hrs
- fentanyl 20-30 min
6
Q
the multiple target pathways
A
- to inhibit the perception of pain in the brain
- to stop transduction/transmission of pain singals
- reduce conditions that cause pain (e.g inflammation)
7
Q
fentanyl
A
- most potent but shortest DOA
- a u-agonist
- can give fentanyl transdermal patch which can provide DOA for up to 70 hrs
8
Q
methadone
A
- relatively potent, DOA can last up to 4 hours
- u-r-agonist
9
Q
morphine
A
u-r agonist
similar to methadone (potent and DOA 4 hrs)
low oral bioavailability - given IV
10
Q
pethidine
A
u-r agonist
weak local anaesthetic action
several side effects, barely used
11
Q
treatment of opioid overdose
A
- naloxone
