bind to opioid receptors in CNS causing inhibition of ascending pain pathways and causing CNS depression

indications:
- MI
- trauma
- post-op
- cancer
- kidney stones
- sickle cell crisis
- back pain

adverse effects:

  • CNS depression
  • constipation
  • hypotension
