Antidepressants Flashcards
SSRI
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor
inhibits SERT
↑ serotonin action
Antidepressant
Adverse effects: Serotonin syndrome (sweating, shivering, tremors, hyperreflexia) Suicidality CYP450 inhibitor CNS Sexual dysfunction weight gain or loss
SNRI
Serotonin & NE Reuptake Inhibitor
Inhibits SERT and NET
antidepressant
includes TCA class of drugs
TCA drugs also affect histamine, cholinergic and adrenergic receptors
similar adverse effects as SSRIs
TCA overdose
3 C’s
Coma
Cardiotoxicity (conduction abnormalities)
Convulsions
SARA
Serotonin Adrenergic Receptor Antagonist
antidepressant
Nefazodone and trazodone block post-synaptic 5-HTR and a1R
Mirtazapine blocks presynaptic a2R, and post-synaptic 5-HTR
Side effects → take in evening
Trazodone → CNS sedation, orthostatic hypotension
Mitrazapine → CNS sedation, weight gain
NDRI
NE and DA Reuptake Inhibitor
antidepressant
side effects
agitation and insomnia → take in morning
SEIZURES
MAOI
MonoAmine Oxidase Inhibitor
↑ NE, 5-HT, and DA
2 week washout period
same side effects as SSRIs
avoid foods high in tyramine (aged or fermented) major concern is hypertensive crisis -severe headache -changes in vision -nosebleeds -chest pain -SOB -confusion -tachycardia -sweating/anxiety
