globalisation
an expansion of a businesses market impacting businesses ability to source inputs (materials and labour)
- EXAMPLE: ‘apple’s products are standardised by other businesses, enables overseas market.. low cost.
technology
the collection of skills, methods, and techniques used throughout the production of goods or services. Technology is seen as the improvement of a process.
- EXAMPLE: ‘Computer controlled machines which help speed up the production process.
quality expectations
customers will purchase on the expectations of quality. It determines the way products ad services are designed and delivered to consumers.

Quality expectations for goods include: Durability
Quality expectations for services include: Reliability
cost-based competition
This involves the actions of competitors and the way they price their products for competitive advantage.
A focus on Cost Minimalisation (cost leadership)… If a business wants to compete on price, they must lower its costs.
-Example: To achieve the lowest cost in comparison to competitors, Qantas has sought to introduce technology, seek alliances, outsource and reform human resource practices.
government Policies
All businesses operating in Australia are subject to policies applied by Local, State, Territory or federal policies. These policies impact operations.
Example: The Fair Work Act (2009) was introduced by the Federal Government was intended to improve the rights of workers. The policy increased Qantas’s operating costs.
legal Regulation
To remain in Operation, a Business must comply with regulations surrounding Labour, Technology and Finance.
Compliance: (collective term) The range of laws in which a business must comply with.
Example: Anti-Discrimination Act (1977).. Business must follow this act and practice in all aspects of the business.
environmental sustainability
Business Operations should be shaped around the Ethical practices that consume the earth’s resources, ensuring its sustainability for the future generation.
Growing public concern and awareness for ethical sustainability has placed pressure on businesses to adopt more environmentally friendly practices.
EXAMPLE: Qantas’ pledge to cut Carbon emissions by 2050 apart of its ‘Qantas Future Planet’ initiative.
ethical responsibility
Businesses must have ethical behaviour which is morally correct.
example: Underpaid staff isn’t ethical, legally and morally.
corporate and social responsibility (CSR)
Corporate Social Responsibility is open and accountable business action based on respect for people, the community and the environment.
EXAMPLE: In Qantas’ reconciliation program it involves employing indigenous Australian’s and supporting Indigenous suppliers.
