Operations Flashcards
What are the 3 types of production processes
Job production , batch production, flow production
What is job production
Method of production where products are made individually
What is batch production
Where one type of product is made and then production is switched to make a different product
What is flow production
Production of one product that takes place continuously using an assembly line, sometimes called mass production
Advantages and disadvantages of job production
a -likely to be high quality (designed to meet customers needs), can often charge high price
d - can be high cost if requires high skilled employees, production may be slow
Advantages and disadvantages of batch production
A- batches can be varied to meet needs of customers, cheaper than job production, can be made specific to customers orders
D- stocks of raw materials may be needed which is extra costs, tasks can be repetitive and boring for workers
Advantages and disadvantages of flow production
A- large quantities are produced for sale, use of machinery can reduce costs
D- mass produced goods may not be high quality , tasks can be repetitive and boring for workers, large stocks of materials needed so expensive
Advantages and disadvantages of using technology in production
A- machines can replace workers reducing costs, waste is reduced as machine are usually more accurate than humans
D- machines can break down disrupting production, may be expensive to buy
What is quality control
Checking that the product or service produced meets the required standards, this can be a physical inspection. Could be during or once production is complete
Advantages of quality control
-Stops poor quality goods and services being sold
-improve reputation of business
-does not discount prediction (workers continue producing and inspectors do the checking)
Disadvantages of quality control
-It does not prevent waste
-inspection can be costly unless done by machine
2 methods of selling
Face to face and telesales
Advantages and disadvantages of face to face selling
A -useful when customers want advice and personal assistance
D - may not be convenient to seller
Advantages and disadvantages of telesales
A- may cost less then selling from a shop
D- costs such as warehouses to store goods and payment to telesales workers
Factors influencing location
Costs (cost of site), proximity to market, proximity to labour, government, proximity to raw materials
What is procurement
-identifying goods and services to buy
-choosing suppliers
-ordering goods and services
-receiving deliveries from suppliers

What is turnover of labour
