Operational vs Conceptual Def Flashcards
How to define concpetual?
How the researcher(s) understand the independent and depending variables based on their own beliefs and prior research
How do you define operational?
How the researchers will measure the dependent variable(s). They may use a Likert scale, (1-6) or a biological measure, or a measure such as time, weight, or distance.
What is a dependent variable?
The participants or group of population you are researching
EX: DV: Attention span (defined as the duration of time, measured in minutes, that an individual can sustain undivided focus on a specific task without being distracted.)
What is an independent varibale?
The researchers predicated outcome or manipulated variable
EX: IV: Snacks (defined as healthy foods, such as carrots or apples, or unhealthy foods such as chips or cookies)
Does conceptual have both IV, DV?
Yes
IV: Snacks (defined as healthy foods, such as carrots or apples, or unhealthy foods such as chips or cookies)
DV: Attention span (defined as the duration of time, measured in minutes, that an individual can sustain undivided focus on a specific task without being distracted.)
Does operational have both DV and IV?
DV: Attention span (will be measured in minutes using a stopwatch)
Alternatively, it could be measured as the number of times that the participant looks away from the task. Or it could be a self-report where the participant estimates what percentage of the time s/he was focused on the task.
It is up to the researchers to determine which measures they will use.
