Clean Install
No traces of previous operating system are kept. Usually performed with new hardware and virtual machines.
Upgrade
Something (user accounts, data, apps, etc.) is kept from the previous operating system.
Windows.old
Folder where old operating system is placed during installation of new operating system when hard disk is not formatted.
Files deleted automatically after 28 days.
Unattended Installation
One in which you don’t need to be in front of the machine to complete the operation. Relies on image deployment.

Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit
Where core deployment tools are located to create images.
MDT
Microsoft Deployment Toolkit
Expands on ADK and simplifies the process and reduces the time each install takes.
Sysprep
System Preparation Tool
Allows you to edit the reference image for deployment
WIM
Windows Imaging File
PXE
Pre-Execution Environment
Image and setup files for an OS installation from a network
Multiboot Installation
Multiple operating systems installed on the same machine. When the system boots you choose which one to run.
Control Panel > System and Security > System > Advanced System Settings
Windows RE
Windows Recovery Environment
Allows you to Refresh (keep files and settings), Reset (reinstall Windows and delete all but default apps), Restore (undo recent changes)
Recovery Partition
Area of the hard drive set aside to hold files that can be used to recover the operating system in the event of a failure.
Windows Upgrade Assistant
Tool that can evaluate your current system to determine if it can be upgraded to Windows 8
USMT
Microsoft Windows User State Migration
Allows you to migrate user file settings related to the applications, Desktop configuration, and accounts.
Can be scripted

Windows Automated Installation Kit
