Operant conditioning Flashcards
Observational learning
Social learning, learning that occurs by watching another persons actions and seeing the consequence presented.
- Values
- Behaviours
- Attitudes
“Active process”, we have to be engaged throughout the whole process.
Modeling
The person that we are observing is known as the model (the one the exhibits the behaviours that we are paying attention to).
5 stages of observational learning
- Attention
- Retention
- Reproduction
- Motivation
- Reinforcement
Attention
Learner actively watches the model,
Retention
Learner stores mental representation of the behaviour,
Reproduction
Learner has the mental and physical capability to perform the behaviour,
Motivation
The learner must want or have a desire to imitate the behaviour,
Reinforcement
A positive outcome means that the learner is more likely to repeat the behaviour again,
Vicarious reinforcement
Learning indirectly from watching another person’s conditioning/behaviour.
Vicarious reinforcement:
Model is “rewarded” for their behaviour, it “increases” likelihood that model’s behaviour will be copied.
Vicarious punishment:
Model is “punished” for their behaviour, “decreases” the likelihood that model’s behaviour will be copied.
