Consciousness Flashcards
Normal waking consciousness (NWC)
Awareness of your thoughts, feelings and behaviours including internal events (feeling hungry, hot or cold) and external events (watching people write something).
Altered state of consciousness (ASC)
Any state that is characteristically different from ‘normal waking consciousness’ in terms of awareness, thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
These can be naturally occurring or induced.
(hypnosis, coma, asleep, under anaesthetic or under the influence of drugs/alcohol).
State of consciousness
An individuals level of awareness of internal and external stimuli at any given moment.
Subjective data
Data collected through personal observations, interpretations, emotions and judgment.
Objective data
Measurement of behaviour collected under controlled conditions which allow data to be directly observed or measured.
Automatic processes
Actions that require little conciseness, awareness or mental effort and do not interfere with performance on other activities.
e.g writing, walking, eating
Controlled processes
Actions that require a high levels of conscious awareness, attention or mantel effort.
e.g maths equation, learning to drive, cooking
Selective attention
Attending to a particular stimulus while ignoring others.
It requires a high level of awareness.
Divided attention
When an individual simultaneously focuses on two or more stimuli or simultaneously undertake two or more tasks.
EOG (electrooculography)
Device that detects, amplifies and records electrical activity in the muscles of the eye.
*Useful in determining stages of sleep (NREM or REM).
EMG (electromyograph)
Device that detects, amplifies and records the electric activity of the muscles.
*Changes in electric activity in muscles indicates states of consciousness
EEG (electroencephalogram)
Device that detects, amplifies and records electric activity in the form of the brain waves.
*
