operant conditioning Flashcards
what is operant conditioning ?
learn based on consequences to behavior
what does reinforcement do ?
INCREASES the frequency of a behavior
what does punishment do ?
DECREASES the frequency of a behavior
what does positive mean ?
adding something
what does negative mean ?
taking away something
positive reinforcement ?
outcome is presented after the desired behavior to increase the behavior (extra tv time)
negative reinforcement ?
removal of something unwanted to increase the behavior (no chores after doing hw)
positive punishment ?
adding something unwanted to reduce the behavior (seatbelt beeping)
negative punishment ?
taking something favorable away to decrease a behavior (taking away a toy)
what is a primary reinforcer ?
something that is inherently rewarding (food, entertainment)
what is a secondary reinforcer ?
something that is learned to be rewarding (applause, money)
who is the person associated with operant conditioning ?
b.f. skinner
what was the skinner box ?
controlled environment for an animal, reinforcement or punishment was used to have animals learn a behavior (press lever for food)
what are the 4 schedules of reinforcement ?
fixed ratio, fixed interval, variable ratio, variable interval
what is the weakest schedule of reinforcement ?
fixed interval
