memory intro and short term memory Flashcards
what is memory ?
retention of facts, events, or other experiences over time
what are the three steps to memory processing ?
encoding: initial processing of info
storage: maintenance of information over a long period of time
retrieval: recovering stored memory
what is sensory memory ?
immediate memory of sensory information
does sensory memory have a large or small capacity ?
large capacity
what is the duration of sensory memory ?
milliseconds
what are the two types of sensory memory ?
iconic and echoic
what is iconic memory ?
visual sensory memory
what is echoic memory ?
auditory sensory memory
what is short term memory ?
memory that is maintained for a short period of time (seconds)
what is the type of memory you are currently thinking about ?
working memory
short term and working memory have limited capacity, what is the number for meaningful chunks NOW ?
4 +- 1
the backward digit span test is used to test what type of memory ?
working memory
what is the delayed response task ?
two boxes are shown, one with a dot, then there is a delay, after the delay the monkey or human has to indicate what side the dot was on.
damage to what brain area causes monkeys and humans to fail the delayed response task ?
dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex
what is the delayed saccade task ?
similar to the delayed response task, a box is shown, but the dot is placed anywhere within the box, there is then a 3 second delay, and when the delay is done the monkey saccades to the remembered location
