operant conditioning Flashcards
operant conditioning
enforcing behavior through punishments and reinforcement both positive and negative. the likelihood of a behavior being repeated based on the consequence. If the consequence is desirable the behavior will be repeated.
If the consequence is undesirable then the behavior is less likely to be repeated.
Example ( Covid 19 regulations )
ABC model
A- Antecedent ( the stimulus that exists in the environment prior to the response )
B- Behaviour ( a response or behaviour to the stimulus )
C-Consequence (consequence in response to the response ).
Positive Reinforcement
a reward given to encourage a response
( giving a sticker for doing your homework )
Negative Reinforcement
removing or reducing unpleasant stimuli
( Not having to do chores because you got a good mark on your test ).
punishment
a behavior that is followed by a negative punishment
response cost
a form of punishment when something desired is removed
the skinner box
the rat learned to press a leaver for food.
positive punishment
adding something undesirable after a behavior has been performed.
( Getting detention for not doing your homework ).
what is a disadvantage of operant conditioning
due to it being voluntary, individuals can choose whether to continue the behaviour or not despite what the consequence is.
