Open and Closed injuries test Flashcards
bursitis
inflammation of the bursa
amputation
an injury in which a part is completely “cut” away from the body. Sometimes it is surgically removed due to the tissue being diseased `or damages beyond repair
avulsion
an injury in which there is a tearing away or forceful separation of tissues structures. can occur in any tissue not just the skin.
hematoma
blood and fluid that pool within a tissue space, a compartment, or an organ. If superficial (close to the skin) will appear as a raised surface of the skin. If deep will usually form within the organ or tissue
incision
a wound made by a cutting object such as a scalpel. Usually performed by a surgeon during a medical procedure
sprain
overstretching or tearing of a ligament that supports a joint
abrasion
an injury that occurs when on or several layers of skin are torn loose or totally removed. The injury only involves disruption to the skin and no other body tissues.
strain
an injury to the muscle or tendon caused by twisting or pulling
tendonitis
inflammation of the tendon
puncture wound
an injury caused by a sharp object that penetrates the skin causing a tunnel like wound as opposed to tearing of the tissue
contusion
injury to the tissue that does not break the skin. bruising is seen at the injury site. mechanism of injury involves direct blow or impact.
ecchymosis
accumulation of blood in the skin and subcutaneous tissues more than one centimeter in diameter. usually found with several soft tissue injuries
laceration
an injury that results from a tear in the skin; also know as a cut. Usually requires stiches. can expose several layers of skin.
coup-tbi
brain injury that occurs under the site of impact and are therefore the most identifiable type of TBI
countre coup - TBI
brain injury that occurs at the opposite side of the initial injury
counter coup - TBI
brain injury that occurs at the opposite side of the initial injury
coup countre coup - TBI
brain injury that causes internal damage to both the site of impact, as well as opposite side of the brain
6 types of open soft tissue injuries
- avulsion
- abrasion
- laceration
- incision
- amputation
- puncture wound
10 types of closed soft tissue injuries
- strain
- sprain
- hematoma
- tendonitis
- bursitis
- contusion
- ecchymosis
- TBI - coup
- TBI - countrecoup
- TBI- coup countre coup
MOI
the method by which damage or trauma occurs to skin, muscles, organs, or bones. It is used to determine severity or likeness of an injury.
laxity
term referencing loose joints that bend more than usual. While it doesn;t always cause problems, sometimes causes pain and can increase your risk of injuries, such as dislocated joints
signs and symptoms
abnormalities that can indicate a potential medical conditon
endfeel/endpoint
type of sensation or feeling which the examiner experiences when the joint is at the end of its available passive range of motion. The quality of the tissue resistance to motion at the end of the range.
range of motion
the capability of a joint to go through its complete spectrum of movements. Measurement of the amount of movement around a specific join or body part
sprain 1st degree
-few tears
-mild
-minimal
-endpoint present
-no laxity
sprain 2nd degree
-moderate
-endpoint present
-no laxity
-partial tear
sprain stage 3rd degree
-severe
-instability
-complete tear
-no end pint
-has laxity
mild strain
-mild
-minimal
-overstretching
-pain with contraction and stretching
moderate strain
-moderate
-partial tear
-pain with contraction and loss of function
severe strain
-severe
-complete tear
-complete loss of stretch and function
sprain effects what tissue structure
ligament
strain effects what tissue structure
tendon or muscle
dangerous signs of a concussion
- headache that gets worse and does not go away
- drowsiness or inability to wake up
- unusual behavior, increased confusion, relentlessness or agitation
- one pupil larger than other
- loss of consciousness
- repeated vomiting or nausea, convulsions, seizures
- slurred speech, weakness, numbness, or decrease coordination
