The Officer on Watch (OOW) has several critical responsibilities to ensure the safe navigation and operation of the ship.

Navigation: The OOW is primarily responsible for navigating the ship safely and efficiently. This includes plotting the ship’s position, maintaining the planned course, and making necessary course corrections.

Watch-Keeping: The OOW must maintain a continuous watch, ensuring that the ship is on the correct course and avoiding any potential hazards. This involves monitoring navigational aids, radar, and other navigational equipment.

GMDSS Radio Watch-Keeping: The OOW is responsible for monitoring the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and other communication equipment to ensure that distress signals and routine communications are handled promptly.

Compliance with Regulations: The OOW must ensure that the ship complies with all relevant international and national regulations, including MARPOL, SOLAS, and company-specific standing orders.

Safety and Pollution Prevention: The OOW must monitor the ship’s operations to prevent pollution and ensure safety on board. This includes overseeing the handling of cargo, waste management, and adherence to environmental regulations.

Emergency Procedures: The OOW must be familiar with and ready to implement emergency procedures in case of fire, collision, grounding, or other emergencies.

Record Keeping: The OOW is responsible for maintaining accurate navigational records, including the ship’s log, charts, and other relevant documents.

Coordination with the Bridge Team: The OOW leads the bridge team, ensuring that all members are aware of their duties and that communication is clear and effective.

Reporting: The OOW must report any incidents, near-misses, or significant events to the master of the ship and, if necessary, to relevant authorities.
