Once a woman reaches menstruation, one primary oocyte per month will complete meiosis 1 which produces a secondary oocyte and a polar body. The secondary oocyte is arrested in metaphase 2 until fertilization.

Once fertilization occurs the secondary oocyte undergoes the second meiotic division to split into a mature ovum and another polar body.
