Male Reproductive Anatomy Flashcards
Seminiferous tubules
Located in the testes and is where sperm is produced
Sertoli cells
Cells that nourish the sperm while the sperm is located in the seminiferous tubules within the testes
Interstitial cells (of Leydig)
Secrete testosterone and other male sex hormones
Testes
Located in the scrotum and house the seminiferous tubules
Scrotum
Hangs outside the abdominal cavity and has a temperature 2-4 degrees Celsius LOWER than the body
Epididymis
Where sperm gain motility and are stored until ejaculation
Vas deferens (and the ejaculation pathway)
Sperm travel through the vas deferens during ejaculation and to the ejaculatory duct to the urethra and out through the penis
Seminal vesicles
Contribute fructose to nourish speed and produce alkaline fluid
Prostate gland
Produces alkaline fluid
Bulbourethral glands
Produce a clear viscous fluid that cleans out any remnants of urine and lubricates the urethra during sexual arousal
Semen
Composed of sperm and seminal fluid
