OOGENESIS Flashcards
Oogenesis
Process of formation of female gamete
Initiation stage
Initiated during embryonic development
Oogonia
Gamete mother cell
Prophase 1
- Meiotic division
- cells start to divide
- Temporarily arrested
- Called primary oocyte
Primary follicle
- Primary oocyte surrounded by granulosa layer
- Large no. degenerate during phase frombirth to puberty
- Only 60k to 80k left in each ovary
Secondary follicle
Primary follicles further surround by layers of granulosa cells and new theca called secondary follicle
Tertiary follicle
- Secondary follicle further gives tertiary follicle
- Characterised by a fluid filled cavity called antrum
Theca layer
-Organised into inner theca(interna) and outer theca(Externa)
Simeltaneously primary oocyte
-Within tertiary follicle grows in size and co mpletes first Meiosis
Meiosis
- Haploid secondary oocyte
- polar body
Secondary oocyte
-Retains bulk of nutrient rich cytoplasm of primary oocyte
Graffian follicle
Tertiary follicle changes into mature graffian follicle
after zona is formed it ruptures to give out sec.
Zona pellucida
Sec. oocyte forms a new membrane around it
