Onsite Inspections Flashcards
what is the function of an OSI?
The OSI is the final verification measure in establishing whether or not a violation of the CTBT– a nuclear explosion – has taken place
What is the purpose the OSI?
The sole purpose of the on-site inspection is to clarify, or find facts on the ground whether a nuclear explosion or a breach of obligation of the treaty
What are methods employed in an OSI?
Overflights, multi spectra imaging, radiation monitoring, seismological monitoring, magnetic field mapping, ground penetrating radar, and drilling to search for explosion cavities.
When can an an OSI occur?
An OSI can only occur after the treaty is has come into force.
What field are exercises and for what purpose have they been carried out?
The first IFE took place in Kazakhstan in 2008 (IFE08) at the former soviet nuclear test site of Semipalatinsk. This was the first opportunity for CTBTO to practice all elements of an inspection together as one integrated process.
More recently this took place in Jordan in 2014 (IFE14).
