What unexpected uses of the IMS?

A

The IMS can now be used for disaster warning and scientific research. For example Indian Ocean earthquake of 2004 and the 2011 Tohoku earthquake that cased the tsunami. The IMS was also able to track the spread of radioactivity. Now the CTBT has signed 14 tsunami warning agreements to provide real time tsunami warning data to MS

When was the Group of eminent persons formed?

A

The GEM was launched in 2013. It brings together internationally recognized experts to provide an innovative and focused approach to advancing CTBT ratification by the remaining 8 Annex 2. The GEM also adopted the Hiroshima Declaration of 2016.

The youth group was launched in 2016 during the symposium on science and diplomacy.

When was the Partial Test Ban Treaty established? And what were its limits?

A

The PTBT was formed in 1963 and only banned testing in outer space, the atmosphere and underwater, but not underground. Furthermore the PTBT did not have a global verification system and relied in national monitoring.

Who were the group of scientific experts? And what did they achieve?

A

The group of scientific experts were commissioned in the 70s to develop a verification system for nuclear testing. After 20 years of work their was instrumental in negations between 1994 and 1996 over the monitoring and inspections of the treaty, it’s entry into force and supporting mandate.

Belgium submitted the final text of the CTBT to the Conference on Disarmament (CD) in 1996.
