One-Way ANOVA Flashcards
When is an ANOVA used?
When there are 3 or more independent groups
What type of data does a ANOVA use?
Parametric (interval or ratio)
What does a one-way ANOVA compare?
The means between the groups you are interested in and determines whether any of those means are significantly different from each other
The one-way ANOVA is an omnibus test statistic what does this mean?
It cannot tell you which specific groups were significantly different from each other, only that at least two groups were
In order to determine which specific groups differed from each other what kind of test will you need to run?
Post-hoc test
State the null hypothesis for a one-way ANOVA
H₀: u₁ = u₂ = u₃ = u₄ = u₅ …
What value do you calculate to determine if there is a significant difference between groups?
F-statistic`
How do you calculate F?
F value = average variance between groups / average variance within groups
When can we reject the null?
When our calculated F > Table F value
OR
Our p-value < level of significance (usually 0.05)
When should you run a post-Hoc test?
only when you have a shown an overall significant difference in group means (i.e., a significant one-way ANOVA result)
What are the 2 types of post-Hoc tests?
- Tukey’s honestly significant difference
- Scheffé post-hoc tests
