Oil Properties Flashcards
What is oil composed of?
Hydrogen and carbon atoms bonded in many different forms(petroleum hydrocarbon)
What is the Pour Point?
The temperature at which a liquid would no longer pour?
What is Viscosity?
The resistance of a liquid from flowing.
What is Surface Tension?
The amount of attraction between the molecules of a substance.
- The higher the air and water temperature, the lower the oil’s viscosity and surface tension
What is American Petroleum Institue (API) Gravity?
A way to determine the differences in gravities between different oil types?
- API > 10 Float
- API < 10 Sink
Why is Benzene dangerous?
- Inhalation hazard
- High vapor pressure, very low exposure limits
- Carcinogen
How do you describe the Sulfur content in an oil?
- > = 1, Sour
- < 1, Sweet
What is Spreading?
The expansion of oil over the surface of the water.
What is evaporation?
The dissipation of the oil in the atmosphere.
What is Emulsification?
Suspended globules of one liquid into another.
What is Dispersion?
The oil is agitated to a level where no slick is observed.
