HAZMAT Properties Flashcards
1
Q
What is the boiling point?
A
The temperature at which the chemical’s vapor pressure equals or exceeds atmospheric pressure.
2
Q
What is Vapor Pressure?
A
- The measure of a liquid’s ability to give off vapors.
- Liquids that readily vaporize are said to be volatile
- Compounds with low boiling points are more volatile.
3
Q
What is Flash Point?
A
- The minimum temperature at which a flammable liquid gives off sufficient vapors which, when in contact with sparks or flame, will ignite.
4
Q
What is the Fire Point?
A
- The point at which a flammable liquid has reached a temperature at which the vapors will continue to burn.
5
Q
What is the autoignition point?
A
- Spontaneous ignition when a substance exceeds its Fire and flash point.
6
Q
What is specific gravity?
A
The relative density of a substance based on water.
- > 1 sink
- <1 float
7
Q
What is solubility?
A
The ability of a gas or vapor to mix and dissolve in water.
8
Q
What are chemical reactions?
A
The process in which substances change into other substances.
9
Q
What is polymerization?
A
Exothermic reactions in which a large number of monomers combine to form polymers.
10
Q
What is combustion?
A
A chemical combination involving oxidation where heat and light are generated
11
Q
What is BLEVE?
A
- A flame impinges on a tank, heating and weakening the tank, ultimately causing failure and explosion.
