Oil pollution Flashcards
1
Q
Causes of oil pollution
A
- leaks from pipelines
- intentional oil spills
- accident spills
- domestic disposal of oil down the drain
2
Q
Effects of oil pollution
A
- some elements of the oil is toxic
- reduces amount of dissolved oxygen
- eutrophication
3
Q
How does recycling control oil pollution
A
- separation and storage
- cooking oil can be converted to biodiesel
4
Q
How does improved tanker operation control oil pollution
A
- better navigation equipment e.g. GPS
- AIS trackers
- restricted shipping routes - away from protected/hazardous areas
- washing procedures - prevents build up of sludge
5
Q
How does improved tanker design control oil pollution
A
- double hulls - only outer layer is protected in an accident
- having 2 of all important equipment - e.g 2 engines
6
Q
How do bund walls control oil pollution
A
- walls that would contain the oil of the tankers failed
7
Q
How do oil interceptors control oil pollution
A
- fitted to drains on busy roads
- fitted to drains on car parks
- oil left on surface and water moves through
8
Q
What are some natural remediation to clean up oil spills
A
- evaporation - lighter components evaporate/heavier components are left to produce tarballs
- dissolution - some oil can dissolve in water
- microbial degradation - bacteria etc can break down the oil
9
Q
What are some clean up methods to help with oil pollution
A
- physical methods - booms (floating barriers, prevent spill spreading), skimmers (remove oil from waters surface)
- chemical methods - dispersants ( chemicals that break down the oil into smaller droplets, easier to biodegrade)
- biological methods - microorganisms break down and digest oil
