Linea Alba
-band of connective tissue which extends from xiphoid process of the sternum to
the symphysis pubis. Serves as an attachment for some abdominal muscles
External Oblique
i. O: lower ribs
ii. I: iliac crest
iii. A: tenses abdominal wall, compresses abdomen
Internal Oblique: beneath external oblique
i. O: iliac crest
ii. I: lower ribs & linea alba
iii. A: same as external oblique
Rectus Abdominis
i. O: coxal bone & symphysis pubis
ii. I: ribs & xiphoid process
iii. A: compresses abdomen, flexes vertebral column; does not laterally flex vertebral
column with unilateral contraction as the previous two muscles do
Transverse abdominis: runs horizontally under top 2 layers
i. O: lower ribs and coxal bone
ii. I: pubic bone & linea alba
iii. A: compresses adbomen
