All certificates of crew member valid, what is the next step?
Make an entry into the list of crew and official logbook.
Give the crew member proper PPE and a safety and security familiarisation
Give crew member a copy of the onboard complaints procedure and job description as per company SMS
and hours of rest form explaining to fill in daily
Make sure the crew member is given adequate rest
Update the crew list and muster list
Refer to the company checklist regarding signing on a new crew member
What differences are there by signing on a young person
When signing the young person on, make an entry into the list of young persons
Refer to the or create a risk assessment regarding young persons onboard:
under 18
inexperienced - there is a limit of what he/she can do with regards to they’re health and safety.
No entry into enclosed spaces, not go aloft or be exposed to extreme temperatures, vibration.
He can not be given night work (12am to 5am)
Separate rest hours for young persons
What are the hours of rest requirements for a young person?
Minimum 12 hours consecutive rest in any 24 hour period
and a rest period of atleast 2 days per week
When a work period is more than 4.5 hours, the must be provided with a rest period of atleast 30 minutes
Maximum 40 hours work per week i.e. 8 hours work per day
