Offender Profiling: Bottom - Up Approach Flashcards
What is bottom - up profiling
. Looks for consistencies in offender’s behaviour during crime
. Uses no pre-established typology - develops profile as crime scene and EWT are increasingly analysed
Aims of bottom - up approach
Generate picture of the offender through systematic analysis of evidence at crime scene
^ ‘data driven’
Smallest Space Analysis
Computer database and programme, patterns identified to see if offensives are linked - relationships between types of crime and people
Investigative Psychology
.Attempt to apply statistical procedures, alongside psych theory to analysis of crime scene evidence
. Help develop statistical ‘database’
What is interpersonal coherence
Central to approach, way offender acts at scene
Geographical Profiling
Uses location to make inferences about likely home of offender - crime mapping
Assumption = serial offenders operate in familiar geographical acres - provides investigators with ‘centre of gravity’
Centre Circle Theory
(Geographical Profiling)
2 models of offender behaviour:
The marauder = operates close to their home
The commuter = likely to have travelled
Evaluation
Evidence support (Investigative Psych) = content analysis of 66 SA cases - using small space analysis. Several common characterstics
Evidence support (Geographical Profiling) = collected info from 120 murder cases by serial killers
