Power Available Altitude for orbit Wind Obstacles Terrain and Turbulence Forced Landing Zone Entry and Exit Elevation Landing Zone
P
Power Available - there should be a 3” margin between straight and level at 60KIAS and max Take Off Power
A
Altitude for Orbit - make right orbit 500ft AGL and 500 ft horizontally from the spot. Look for 4 spots to overfly to keep consistent orbit track. Orbit at 60KIAS.
W
Wind - Use crab angle to determine direction and speed.
Look out for indicators on the ground - trees, smoke, flags
Crosswind - Spot moves behind
Downwind - Spot comes abeam (moving forward)
Base - Spot moves in front
Upwind - Spot moves abeam (moving backward)
Beware of wind shift at different altitudes.
O
Obstacles - look for obstacles near the spot and then work outwards
T
Terrain and Turbulence - upslope or downslope? Causes for turbulence?
F
Forced Landing Zone - locate an alternate landing zone ideally for each leg.
E
Entry and Exit - repeat WOTF
Elevation - Determine elevation again
L
Landing Zone Enough Space? Clear? Dust/Snow? Fire hazard? Surface? Extend down wind, keep eyes on spot, make normal approach.
