“No, Lennie. I ain’t mad. I never been mad, an’ I ain’t now. That’s a thing I want you to know.” ~ Lennie burdens George- George comforts Lennie with golden tale of their ranch - conscientious minder - will not leave Lennie - mercy killing - final act of friendship.

“You get in trouble you do bad things and I got to get you out.” ~ parent like relationship

Lennie “small” ~ irony - not small actually very big.

“I don’t like this place, George. This ain’t no good place. I wanna get outta here.” ~ instinctive like an animal - burden to George
Lennie - childlike
“You never oughta drink water when it ain’t running, Lennie.” ~ childlike - needs to be protected.
Happy “pettin” soft things.
More accepting of other defective characters (candy,crooks,curleys wife) - like a child.
Lennie - trouble/dangerous
“Lennie ain’t no fighter, but Lennie’s strong and quick and Lennie don’t know no rules.” ~ makes Lennie dangerous - simple minded - learning difficulties but sane - poses no threat - physical strength- needs/ dependant on George -for life + future - no asylum.
Curley - insecure
“Curley’s like a lot of little guys. He hates big guys.”
