Costumes
Era - when plays take place,kind of clothes worn.
Personality of the character - what can reveal about character - clothes worn.
Functionality - costumes get dirty? - clean shirt each performance? How often change clothes? - have time? - wear layers? - too hot?
Makeup,wigs,beards - wardrobe department - older,younger,hairier?
Set & setting
Realism - want set look like real place?
Symbolism- set tying show idea visually?
Scene changes/locations - How many? How often?
Colours & materials - real wood/furniture or scenic paintings.
Constraints of the space/sight lines - any pillars etc. - any need to build around?
Props
Era - how different modern tv look from one in the 60’s? - write with biro/quill?
Functionality- how used? Who uses them?
Realism/detail - audience close/not to props?
Durability - survive being handled by actor every night - entire run.
Consumables - food/drink/something that breaks - need replacing.
Facial expressions/gestures/acting
Expressions - raising eyebrow, frowning, dead-pan, smiling (fake/real), mouth open, eye contact
Gestures - posture,arms crossed, hands gesticulating, legs crossed (away/towards), nail biting, fiddling (hair/prop), fidgeting, fists clenched, nodding head,scratching head, shaking, spitting, picking nose (showing no manners).
Acting - speed of movement, position on stage, closeness/distance from others,pauses. Realistic/melodrama acting?
Lighting
Colours - warm/cold/romantic/frightening? Naturalistic (daylight) or bright splashes of colour.
Angles - spooky shadows? Brightly lit? Muted candlelight?
3 point lighting - make actors look naturalistic- light from 3 different directions.
Intensity - which direction light strongest? Sun/moon shining one direction? Or stage evenly lit?.
Effects/gobos- want to project sign/have flickers?
Music/sound effects/tone of voice
Background - setting the scene? Audience be aware or not?
Special sound effects - eg gunshot,doorbell,phone etc - interrupt action? Expected/not?
Music - add to atmosphere? How loud? Live/recorded?
Tone of voice - extremely important to reveal mood of character.what feeling revealing? What volume spoken at? If whisper - use stage whisper. Character have stutter/lisp/accent?
