Proximal 2/3 of Oesophagus
What is Squamous Cell Carcinoma associated with
Achalasia
Caustic Stricture
Plummer-Vinson Syndrome
Where does Adenocarcinoma occur
Distal 1/3 of Oesophagus
What is Adenocarcinoma associated with
Barret’s Oesophagus (Progression through Dysplasia to cancer)
When does Oesophageal Cancer usually present
Late
Tumours have commonly spread to Regional Lymph Nodes and/or liver at presentation
What often limits Surgerical Intervention
Local Invasion (heart, trachea, aorta)
Common Metastases
Hepatic
Brain
Pulmonary
Bone
Prognosis
Poor - 5 year survival ~10%

and using TNM Classification
Oesophageal Cancer Treatment
Surgical Oesophagectomy (only potential cure) +/- adjuvant (after) or neoadjuvant (before) Chemotherapy
Combined Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy offer some prospect of improved long-term survival (in 1yr) in patients with Locally Advanced Inoperable Disease
